Structural Test Solution for Critical Design Verification

One of the world’s largest aircraft providers faced the need to enhance efficiencies across all its structural testing facilities, Moog and Savery Hydraulics responded with a robust long-term solution.

The Challenge

To meet current structural test requirements, an integrated package was developed, incorporating control, hydro-mechanical actuation, and the necessary infrastructure and safety systems. The solution also facilitates the re-use of equipment for future testing needs, ensuring compatibility with both existing and future technologies across major wing test systems. Additionally, energy-saving measures and environmental impacts were considered for future operations. The need for precise control through equal area actuation was addressed, accommodating very long strokes within the limited space available in the test framework.

The Solution

Moog and Savery Hydraulics delivered a cost-effective solution, incorporating digital test control technology that helps the customer benefit from greater efficiency and the ability to meet the demands of their tests. What’s more, the innovative test product family allows faster, safer, and more accurate testing, saving the company time and money on its extensive testing schedules.

 

The team were able to utilise advanced digital products and solutions to enhance functionality, give greater visibility and reduce costly site cabling. The range of low friction actuators were designed to be fitted with current or legacy abort manifold assemblies.

 

This was achieved by careful design, incorporating the necessary adaption elements to provide compatibility across the complete range of actuation devices. 

 

The design philosophy was focused around re-use and standardisation. Devising a range of pseudo equal area actuators with body lengths similar to those of unequal area but with equal effective drive areas.

The Result

The implementation of Moog and Savery Hydraulics’ solution has significantly improved the efficiency and accuracy of the aircraft provider’s structural testing processes. Meeting the technical challenges of the customer test requirement, the solution reduced test duration whilst ensuring the protection of their invaluable test specimens. This has led to substantial time and cost savings, ensuring the company can meet its rigorous testing demands more effectively.
